Compulsory insurance on entry to Zanzibar with effect from October 1, 2024

With effect from October 1, 2024, all visitors to Zanzibar (except residents with a Tanzanian residence permit) must take out mandatory entry insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) for the duration of their stay (up to 92 days).

This insurance can only be taken out with the ZIC. Other international travel insurance policies are not accepted. The cost is currently USD 44 per person. Further information can be found on the Visit Zanzibar website.

Entry may be refused if the correct insurance is not presented.

According to the current status, Zanzibar charges an infrastructure tax per person per night, payable locally at the hotel:
2-3 star hotels = USD 4.00
4-5 star hotels = USD 5.00

The star information refers to the respective country category.

For scheduled arrivals in the destination area from 04:00 in the morning, the hotel room is only available on the day of arrival from the official check-in time of the respective hotel. The official check-out time of the hotel on the day of departure must also be observed. This includes return flights until 3.00 a.m. on the following day. Early check-in or late check-out can be booked via our service team, subject to availability and for an additional charge.
