THE HISTORY OF THE HOTEL

The history of the hotel building dates back to the early 19th century when a structure stood on the corner of Drottninggatan and Västra Hamngatan, owned by wholesaler Elis Fredrik Brusewitz.

In 1867, Fire & Life Insurance Company Svea acquired the property and used it for two decades before outgrowing the space. A new building was commissioned through an architectural competition, won by Stockholm architect Adolf Emil Melander with his design "Hör oss Svea." Gothenburg architects Hans Hedlund and Yngve Rasmusson were hired to adapt the design to the insurance company''s needs.

Construction was completed in 1889 by FO Peterson and Söner Byggnads AB. The same company would later renovate the building for its transformation into the Elite Plaza Hotel Gothenburg. Upon completion, the Gothenburg Handels- och Sjöfartstidning praised the building as "an ornament for Gothenburg, but also for the whole of Sweden."

The insurance company vacated the premises in 1974, leaving the building empty until 1979. After renovations, it served as a teaching facility for the University of Gothenburg until 1995. Following a period of vacancy, the property was acquired by a limited partnership, with FO Peterson & Söner and SSRS Holding as equal owners.

The Sveahuset was then transformed into a first-class hotel, the Elite Plaza Hotel, which opened its doors in January 2000.
